The novel is divided into five volumes, each containing several chapters. The first volume, Pudhu Vellam (New Floods), introduces the protagonist Vandhiyathevan, a loyal friend of Aditya Karikalan, the eldest son of Sundara Chola. Vandhiyathevan is entrusted with a secret message from Aditya Karikalan to his father and sister Kundavai, who live in Thanjavur. On his way, he encounters various adventures and challenges, as well as meets several important characters, such as Nandini, the beautiful and mysterious wife of a powerful minister; Azhwarkadiyan Nambi, a spy and devotee of Lord Vishnu; and Arulmozhivarman, the younger son of Sundara Chola, who is in Sri Lanka fighting a war.
The second volume, Suzharkaatru (Whirlwind), shifts the focus to Arulmozhivarman's life in Sri Lanka, where he is known as Raja Raja. He is involved in a war against the Sinhalese king Mahinda V, who has imprisoned his ally Aniruddha Brahmarayar. He also falls in love with a princess named Manimekalai, who is betrothed to his cousin Maduranthakan. Meanwhile, Vandhiyathevan reaches Thanjavur and delivers the message to Kundavai, who is worried about her brother Aditya Karikalan's safety. She decides to send Vandhiyathevan to Kadambur to warn Aditya Karikalan about a possible assassination plot by Nandini and her associates. a474f39169
